Podiatrists are foot specialists. They are trained to assess, diagnose and treat foot and lower limb problems without the need for a GP referral.
People are often confused about the difference between a Podiatrist, a Chiropodist and a Foot Health Practitioner. Firstly, Podiatry is simply a more modern name for Chiropody other than that there is no difference.
Since 1993, only those that have completed a recognised course and are registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), which safeguards standards of care on behalf of the public and sets standards for training, professional skills, behaviour and health, are permitted to call themselves a Podiatrist or Chiropodist. The NHS will employ only HCPC registered podiatrists.
By contrast, anyone with no prior medical training can set up as a “foot health professional” or “foot care practitioner” after taking a course sometimes as short as 2 weeks with very little practical tuition. These practitioners are not regulated in any way and whilst they may seemingly offer similar treatments to a Podiatrist, it is obvious that the level of expertise, skill and training will not compare. A Podiatrist does not only learn how to treat conditions of the leg and feet but, as a result of his/her medical training, understands why the condition has arisen and what can be done to alleviate future problems. A Podiatrist will often recognise early warning signs of health problems and refer patients to their GPs.
To be certain that you receive the best care, check that your Podiatrist/Chiropodist is registered with the HCPC by checking their name online at www.hpcheck.org
